In response to: Why Windows is better than Linux (by T Bone)

Here is why Windows is better than Linux!

(1) Installing programs is easy with windows because there is a standard. Try installing VLC and you'll see what I mean.

(2) Anytime you try to install or change something on your own computer you have to type a password. And god forbid you run the program in root, then you get every warning that exists.

(3) Installing anything good in Linux requires an entire weekend ending up in learning how to reinvent the wheel.

(4) To truly use any Linux distribution your going to have to either take classes in how Linux works or spend time reading a lot of books and forums.

I think that what we have here is someone who doesn't really know what he is talking about. He didn't take the time to really try? Last time I looked, downloading and installing VLC is as easy as searching for it in Synaptic, ticking a box and hitting apply. Whilst I'm on that subject, with Windows, you need to go searching through web pages to be able to download the beloved ".exe file."

I would rather type in my root password every time I run something which could be potentially threatening to my computer than have a "piss-you-off" ding dong prompt which pops up in the centre of the screen greying out the rest of the display until you do what it says. Even then "you don't have permission to modify this" when you try and move your program files around or delete them because Add/Remove programs couldn't do the job properly.

Installing "Anything good" is as easy as 1, 2, 3 if it is in the distro's repositories. If it isn't, installing software isn't hard, especially if you have a Debian based operating system such as Ubuntu where you can just double click it and install it with Deb package manager. Quicker than windows.

The nearest thing Windows has to a repository is opening Internet Explorer to a page where you can "Buy Windows Software."

The last one made me laugh. I can play the drums, I've never had a lesson in my life, its fully self taught. Sure, you can go on a "Linux course" and learn all about it, I know how to use linux just by fiddling about on it and asking for assistance on one of the many ubuntu community support forums. Wake up.

People must wake up and realize that spending a ridiculous amount of money on an operating system is NOT the only option.

Welcome to Wingoes, center of resources and amusing posts. We will help you all to understand why Linux is better than Windows. Once you understand (or if you understand already), you will be able to still use this site and hopefully get a few laughs off of it.
